Toyota Electric and Hydrogen AE86 Concepts

Toyota Electric and Hydrogen AE86 Concepts

Toyota’s creations for the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon were, again, a surprise. This time, everything else was upstaged by two specially-modified eco-friendly ’80s AE86 creations named the AE86 H2 Concept and the AE86 BEV Concept. The H2 Concept gets a modified inline-four engine that runs on liquid hydrogen mated to a hydrogen fuel cell that allows it to run emissions-free and still sound like an internal combustion engine. The AE86 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) Concept subs out the gas engine for an electric motor from a Tundra HEV along with a Prius PHEV battery. Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that the AE86 BEV Concept gets a manual gearbox for shifting duties. These one-offs won’t ever see production, but they certainly showcase some great eco mod work on a vehicle that’s definitely old school.
