While emoji have recently become an integral part of communication, it might surprise you to learn that the original collection of images is almost two decades old. Emoji takes readers from the jump from pictograms and emoticons to emoji, as the book showcases the original designs by Shigetaka Kurita that he introduced in 1999. These original emoji were only available in Japan, with the western world waiting a dozen years before Apple and Google adopted the Unicode Standard and shared 722 emoji for the iPhone and for Android devices. Along with the book, Kickstarter backers will receive a smartphone keyboard that gives them access to these original designs, allowing them to give their text convos a retro flair.
