You know video games are a big deal when exotic automakers are “building” cars just to exist in them. Jaguar did just that for Sony Playstation’s Gran Turismo Sport with their all-electric 1,020-horsepower hypercar known as the Vision Gran Turismo Coupé, and it’s about as slinky and menacing as they come. Though it only exists in the game (and in our dreams), the on-screen performance is astounding: 0-62 mph in less than two seconds and a top speed of 200+ mph. The project took more than one afternoon, amounting to six years of development in response to a challenge put out by Polyphony Digital (the game’s creator) for carmakers to build virtual automobiles for the game’s 15th anniversary. Serious thought and virtual engineering went into the vehicle, and it boasts light and rigid carbon fiber composite materials and a 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution for ideal handling characteristics. The car also uses iconic Jaguar styling cues from their vintage racers but with a futuristic ethos that builds on the “leaping cat” look. No one will ever own this virtual car, but players will be able to download it in the game starting at the end of November. Time to polish up that virtual helmet.
