This Prefab Cabin Is Built to Withstand the Elements

The views of nature in the town of Vilches, Chile, can best be described with words like “picturesque,” “idyllic” and “breathtaking.” The downside is the extreme weather conditions. That’s why this prefab cabin from TuCroquis had to be built to withstand everything from sweltering heat to mountains of snow. Those requirements meant a huge sloped roof to help with the snow and a buffer space between the interior and exterior called a “chiflonera” that helps with temperature. They also didn’t want to harm the surroundings, so the cabin is built on an elevated platform to avoid damaging the trees on site. Architect and builder Felipe Lagos and interior designer Ramón Vallejos from the firm delivered an incredibly stunning cabin made with wood and steel that’s as gorgeous as the nature that surrounds it. This is a writer’s retreat we’d happily use year round.
