Volkswagens, apparently, not just for land duties. The German car juggernaut has worked with solar-powered boat maker Silent Yachts, as well as design firm CUPRA, to create a catamaran powered by the sun “to put a ship with MEB propulsion on the water in the course of 2022.” Using VW’s MEB flexible platform, typically reserved for cars, for watercraft also helps keep costs down. Of course, when it comes to large luxury boats, the savings might not make them economical, anyway. The Silent Yacht 50, as it is called, is 50 feet long and has three levels. Ample solar panels power the silent propulsion craft, giving it a truly opulent atmosphere on top of the substantial creature comforts. 50 of them will be built each year, and we’re guessing they’ll probably sell out.
