When it comes to motorcycles we’ve featured a bit of everything from the glorious and the gorgeous to the custom and the insane; The Madboxer motorcycle is a little bit of all of those things because it’s built around a full-size Subaru WRX engine. The builder, Marcel van Hooijdonk, is a Hawke’s Bay (New Zealand) local who was challenged by a friend to “knock it up in the shed mate” after he had seen an artist impression of a concept Subaru-powered bike. Like the madman we imagine he is, Marcel took on the challenge and set about building a custom motorcycle around an EJ25 engine of a new WRX. Mock-ups were done physically and with AutoCad. Custom pieces were milled or lathed. A Kawasaki fuel tank, smaller turbo and modified Japanese transmission were fitted to the bike. It might have taken fives years to complete, but the end result is awesome and downright absurd. Don’t expect to find The Madboxer sitting on a trailer or in a shed, either, because it’s actually been certified street legal by the Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association that signs off on all modified vehicles in NZ.
