Based on the 3.0-liter TD6 powered version of the Land Rover Discovery that we’ve all come to love, Land Rover “Project Hero” is a new version of the specialty SUV specifically designed to help the Red Cross in search and rescue operations. Based at the Austrian Red Cross training center in Erzberg, Project Hero will be put into use for twelve months to develop new and innovative techniques for complex disaster relief scenarios using, wait for it, the Align M480L UAV drone that can be deployed from the roof and controlled from the cabin using a tablet. In addition to the drone, the amount of specialty build out and kit in this vehicle is truly remarkable. Heavy-duty sliding floor in the trunk area that doubles as an additional work surface. Strategically positioned LED lighting for night vision. Multiple frequency radio equipment and innovative power supply points with multiple plug arrangements. Tool racks, gear cubbies and mounting points behind the rear seat, rear windows and under the floor. If an international agent was on a search and rescue mission, this is the vehicle they’d want to be driving.
