The Porsche 917 might not be in the everyman’s automotive vernacular, but it’s a legend among the motorsport cognoscenti. But you can’t exactly go out and buy an original, considering only 60 of them were ever made. The UK’s Icon Engineering, however, wants to make it possible. Co-Founder Dave Eaton fell in love with the 917 as a child and ended up buying a body shell in 2005 and ended up meticulously designing parts in CAD to make the car a reality. The engine might not be the original race car’s flat-twelve cylinder monster, but it does get a high-revving flat-six, new and improved crash structure, and high strength steel tubing instead of aluminum. The look is true to the original race car with its sleek wedge body and low slung cabin. Icon will build 60 of them for some passionate Porsche racing buffs with big wallets.
