This ultra-special project is an homage to a one-off Ferrari 250 GT SWB that was modified by Giotto Bizzarrini in 1962 to compete with the now legendary and then new Ferrari 250 GTO. Bizzarrini, who had worked on the GTO, was pilfered by Count Giovanni Volpi, owner of the Scuderia Serenissima racing team. Bizzarrini drastically modified the donor car with a long roof for aerodynamics and a lower ride height. He also moved the engine further back and modified it, as well. It was dubbed the Ferrari 250 GT SWB “Breadvan” based on its rather unconventional looks. Netherlands-based Niels van Roji Design decided to build their own reinterpretation of the original using a 550 Maranello grand tourer as the base car. The idea was spawned by a sketch of a 550 shooting-brake-style vehicle, and the project is now underway. Dutch coachbuilder Bas Van Roomen is building it based on Niels van Roji’s designs, and it involves more than just slapping an extended cabin to the roofline and rear. Modifications are being made to the front, the hood, fender vents, doors, and the interior. True to the original Breadvan, the new project has front-mounted V12, two seats, and a manual transmission. We can’t wait to see the finished product.
