Using technology in disaster or war-stricken areas to help those in need apropos but not always well-executed. Tech firm Feros Corp. has just designed an emergency vehicle inspired by none other than nature’s best survivors, ants. The design of the ANT (Advanced Necessities Transporter) mimics an ant’s multi-segmented body that bends when the need arises. Designed to go just about anywhere, the ANT will ferry supplies in two modes: Rapid mode is used for speed over rough terrain, while Transporter mode docks and locks the primary vehicle with an accordion-like expandable Disaster Relief Unit that can not only increase carrying capacity but also act as housing, a medical treatment center, or a food and water distribution unit. The body folds from horizontal to vertical as it docks just like an ant’s body would adjust to suit the situation. The ANT can be driven or remote piloted, given it even more versatility. Such a vehicle would greatly benefit those in difficult environments and those who provide assistance. We’d love to see this concept make it to production someday, and the brilliant thinking behind it warrants serious consideration for a real build.
