Original Artwork for Led Zeppelin’s Debut Album Headed to Auction

There’s no denying the fact that legendary English rock bank Led Zeppelin has more than secured their place in the pantheon of greatest bands of all time. We’re willing to argue that most of their releases deserve places on the list of Best Vinyl Records, but none of that would likely have been possible without their self-titled debut album. Which brings us to the upcoming Christie’s auction that includes the original artwork from Led Zeppelin’s debut album. As the story goes, Jimmy Page didn’t like artist George Hardie’s initial idea for the album cover so he suggested he do something with Sam Shere’s famous 1937 photograph of the Hindenberg disaster. Hardie decided to take that idea and make it his own by recreating the picture with stippling. You’ve seen the album cover no doubt, so the rest is history. The artwork will be for sale during Christie’s “The Open Book: Fine Travel, Americana, Literature and History in Print and Manuscript” online auction from June 2 – June 18.
