Love Hultén is a man that, if we’re being completely honest, probably has a screw or two loose because of his absolute obsession with taking all things vintage video game and dragging it into the modern world with his unique combination of craft, design and invention. He did Nintendo. He did the Pixel Vision 2.0. He did a portable arcade inspired by Battleship. He also did a bunch of others, but if we got into all of them we wouldn’t have time to talk about his latest creation Evoboxx. Based on the cellular automaton–aka zero-player game–that is the John Horton Conway 1970’s classic Game of Life, Evoboxx is a self-evolving game that plays out based on the initial configuration set by the user. This particular iteration of the game is housed in a folding hardwood body that includes a battery-powered Raspberry Pi 3+, mono speaker, 8″ LCD and 50mm quartz crystal sphere for navigation. In other words, it’s every bit as beautiful and functional as everything you’ve come to expect from Love Hultén while still looking like something straight out of an episode of Lost.
