LEGO Is Making Sustainable Pieces From Plant-Based Plastic

A few years ago, LEGO spent over $150 million (1 billion DKK) to establish the LEGO Sustainable Materials Center as part of their commitment to use sustainable materials in their building sets and packaging by 2030. The first fruits of their labor are finally here, as LEGO just announced that a range of sustainable LEGO elements made from plant-based plastics will be arriving in sets later this year. It’s only fitting then that the first pieces made using plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane will be botanical elements like leaves, bushes and trees. The new pieces are technically identical to the ones produced using conventional plastic, so these new elements won’t feel any different when you’re assembling them or when you accidentally step on one. It’s going to be a while before you can build a full LEGO set using the “repeatedly recyclable” bricks, but the technology and the brand’s commitment to sustainability is impressive.
