While we’re generally reaching for a strong bottle of barrel-aged whiskey whenever we want to make a cocktail, there’s a case to be made that you should be making your whiskey cocktails with cognac. Cognac, that special varietal of brandy named for the region in France where it’s produced, is just as delicious as your favorite aged whiskey or Scotch if it’s aged right. Which brings us to this bottle of Gautier Cognac that’s been aging since 1762. We’re not going to pretend we have any idea what a two-and-a-half century old bottle of Cognac tastes like, but that’s only because we don’t have the almost $150,000 that this particular bottle sold for at auction recently. According to Sotheby’s, the auction house that sold it, this is one of only three bottles of this exceedingly rare Cognac that remains to this day.
