In 1861, the S/S NEVA crashed into another ship off the coast of Læsø. The crew was saved but the precious cargo was not. That cargo? Beer from more than 30 breweries. Now, Mikkeller, with the help of White Labs and the Ternen dive team, are letting you taste the beer that was lost over 150 years ago. Wreck Ale is made from yeast that was cloned from that found in the bottles recovered by the diving team. Not only that, it’s brewed to taste like the old ale did when it was fresh. White Labs analyzed the beer to help recreate the color and alcohol strength. They even determined the malts and hops used, so Wreck Ale is a spitting image of the stuff aboard the S/S NEVA. Something tells us it won’t taste like Heady Topper.
