Tom Sachs is one of those contemporary artists that many would consider polarizing. On one hand, carving your name into a Stanley tape measure with a new sticker on it and then selling it for $250 is completely absurd. On the other hand, designing the Nike x Tom Sachs Exploding Poncho is pretty damn cool. Sachs truth seems to be somewhere in between with his visceral commentary on consumerism, branding and corporate bullshit that’s brought to life in sculptural form with a hodgepodge of found materials and objects along with a not insignificant amount of the artist’s unique building methods. “Timeline” is Sachs first major solo exhibition in Germany in over 15 years and is a unique retrospective of his work over the course of his career. The lineup includes some of his most famous pieces like the Hello Kitty Nativity sculpture, life-size Miffy statue, Chanel Guillotine and a large-format sculpture of the twin towers of the World Trade Center before September 11th created specifically for the exhibit. Tom Sachs “Timeline” runs through April 26th, 2020 at the SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen Art Museum in Germany.
