Instead of extolling the virtues of the game we all know and love as football, we’re going to take a few minutes to wax nostalgic about author Jim Murray and photographer Neil Leifer. Since the 50s, Leifer and Murray have dedicated themselves to immortalizing epic moments in sport through their words and images. Leifer captured that iconic shot of Muhammad Ali towering over Sonny Liston that will be burned into your brain for the rest of your life. Murray helped give birth to Sports Illustrated and won a Pulitzer for Commentary in 1990. Guts and Glory: The Golden Age of American Football, 1958-1978 is a collection of what Leifer considers to be his best images (the football ones, obviously), taken from over 10,000 rolls of film he’s shot, introduced by famous columns from Murray.
