What to Drink This Weekend: Chocolate Martini

Looking for a new cocktail to try out this weekend? Want to wind down with a fresh new drink? We’ve got you covered. Here’s what you should drink this weekend.

Valentine’s Day is fast-approaching so we thought it’d be appropriate to whip up a romantic (and not too complicated) cocktail for this weekend. So, if you like dessert drinks and fancy yourself a bit of a sweet tooth then this drink is for you. We’re making a Chocolate Martini.

The Espresso Martini has been the de-facto cool martini variation for years now while the chocolate martini has fallen out of favor. But, we think this decadent delight deserves another chance. It’s richly sweet and, when prepared with the right ingredients, can still taste refined. Plus, it doubles as both an end of the night cocktail and a dessert to cap off your romantic dinner.

Chocolate Martini Ingredients

Vodka – No need to reach for the very top-shelf vodka for this cocktail, whatever you happen to have on your bar cart should suffice. Steer clear from any flavored vodka and stick with any reliable brands you enjoy. Haku’s is a nice upgrade option while Tito’s will do just fine in a pinch. Ketel One is also an old standby for good reason.

Chocolate Liqueur – When it comes to chocolate liqueur Godiva is truly the gold standard. It’s very good and readily available. If you happen to have a craft distillery in your area making a good chocolate liqueur, go for it. Otherwise, stick with what works.

Creme de CacaoGiffard Cacao is a good option here for our creme de cacao. You can also find creme de cacao from beloved producers like Lee Spirits and Tattersall, among others.

Half-and-half – If you’re anything like my dad, you’ve got a pint of half-and-half in the fridge at all times. Otherwise, go ahead and pick up some at your local grocery store and pick some up. It’ll add richness and depth to this decadent drink.

Cocoa Powder – Any cocoa powder will do here but we’re a sucker for the classic Hersey’s Cocoa. Great for baking, great for cocktail garnishes.

Chocolate Martini Recipe

  1. Prepare your martini glass with a cocoa powder rim by pouring a small amount of chocolate liqueur into a small plate and a small amount of cocoa powder into another plate. Dip the rim of your martini glass in the chocolate liqueur and then into the cocoa powder. Set aside.
  2. Combine 1 ounce each of vodka, chocolate liqueur, and creme de cacao and half an ounce of half-and-half into an ice-filled cocktail shaker.
  3. Shake until well-chilled, about 20 seconds.
  4. Strain into your prepared glass.
  5. Enjoy!
