The 8 Best Cigars to Enjoy While Golfing

The right cigar for golfing burns evenly in the wind, has a pleasant smell, and is priced just right.

The 8 Best Cigars to Enjoy While Golfing

Golf season is in full swing, and for those who are less serious about the actual game of golf and more focused on a relaxing day at the links with good friends, finding the right cigar makes all the difference. Smoking a good cigar while golfing slows down the game, calms the nerves, and takes one’s mind off the pressure of performing. To enjoy a cigar is to relax, discern the flavors, and take a mini-vacation of sorts. Cigar smoking provides relaxation in a game that can be stressful even if the competition isn’t all that serious.

These are the eight best cigars for a game of golf, tried and tested.

What Makes a Good Golf Cigar?
  • Construction

High-quality construction to combat uneven burn in windy conditions

  • Body

Mild to medium-bodied in case you don’t get something to eat on the links

  • Cost

Under $20 per stick in case you accidentally leave it behind

  • Aroma

Great aroma so your buddies can enjoy the scent even if they don’t partake

Perdomo Reserve Champagne Epicure 6
Perdomo Reserve Champagne Epicure 6

This one is easily one of my favorites on the golf course. Not only is it wonderfully delicious with coffee, chocolate, and honey on the palate and a creamy undertone, but it’s also impeccably crafted. The Connecticut shade wrapper encases Nicaraguan binder and filler for mellowness on top of this medium-bodied smoke. Our go-to size is the Epicure 6 with just the right ring gauge. Get yourself a full box because you’re gonna want to smoke these all the time.

Alec Bradley American Classic Blend Robusto
Alec Bradley American Classic Blend Robusto

For an affordable smoke to be this tasty should be a crime. Alec Bradley’s American classic blend uses Honduran Connecticut shade for the wrapper and a Nicaraguan filler to combine for a delectable and very approachable mild to medium body that even a cigar novice can handle. It’s smooth and consistent from first light to the end, and they’re inexpensive so you can treat the whole foursome to one.

5-pack: $15
La Aroma de Cuba Connecticut Monarch
La Aroma de Cuba Connecticut Monarch

This is the mildest iteration of the La Aroma de Cuba, and that makes it perfect for a summer golf day. The Monarch is hand-crafted in Nicaragua and uses a beautiful Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. Triple-fermented Nicaraguan tobacco leaf is used for the binder and filler, which makes it a well-balanced mild-to-medium-bodied smoke with hints of espresso, chocolate, and cedar. The surprise is the slightly spicy finish that lends to the wonderful complexity.

5-pack: $36
Montecristo White Churchill
Montecristo White Churchill

If you want a cigar that never disappoints, the Monte White Churchill is an excellent choice due to its consistency, construction, and flavor. This 7” stogie might just last you the entire front nine, and you’ll enjoy every puff of the Dominican and Nicaraguan long filler tobacco leaf wrapped in paper-smooth Ecuadorian Connecticut shade. It’s rife with cream, almonds, mild spice, and coffee, and the draw is pretty much perfect every single time. It’s also mild enough to light up at the earliest tee time after or even without breakfast. It’s fantastic with a medium roast black coffee.

Box of 27: $423
Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Verona Court Tubos
Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Verona's Court Tubos

The Reserva Real line has been one of my favorite smokes for years, both on and off the links. The rich flavors include leather, spice, and cedar with some mild nuttiness in the mix. The Nicaraguan long-filler is wrapped in a smooth Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper to keep the body medium while maintaining a manageable level of spice. The cigar is consistent from beginning to end with a wonderfully even burn. We like the Verona’s Court Tubos because you can toss them in your golf bag without requiring a case.

5-pack: $52
Casa Cuba Doble Cuatro
Casa Cuba Doble Cuatro

This was the final medium-bodied creation conjured up by the late Carlos Fuente Sr. The Casa Cuba line imparts a medium body with sweet undertones, cedar, orange peel, spice, and a long, creamy and toasty finish. In a word: delicious. This cigar errs on the side of medium to full body, so there’s a tad more strength to it, but the larger 54 ring gauge prevents it from getting too hot and strong. The construction and even burn are perfect for windy golf outings.

Box of 30: $556
CAO Gold Label Corona Gorda
CAO Gold Label Corona Gorda

One of the best beginner stogies also happens to be a gem for the golf course. The CAO Gold blend offers up notes of vanilla, cream, and nutmeg for a truly flavorful and wonderfully mild smoke. The Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and Nicaraguan filler combine for a tasty smoking experience that’s as good with a cold beer as it is with coffee. You won’t find a better mild handmade stogie for less money. The ring gauge and length make it long-lasting, too.

Per stick: $8.85
Arturo Fuente Curly Head
Arturo Fuente Curly Head

They might not be the prettiest cigars around, but what the Arturo Fuente Curly Heads pack in terms of flavor is not to be underestimated. They’re tasty, easy to smoke, and seriously affordable at a mere $3.50 a stick. They also happen to be handmade with Dominican fillers and a Connecticut wrapper that combine to deliver a smooth mild-to-medium-bodied smoke. The burn starts out a bit wonky, but it evens out pretty well. The subtle flavors include cream, coffee, and nuts, and you can smoke them for 18 holes without getting light-headed. Bring a box to share on the links, and you’ll be the winner even if you lose half your balls.
