The “Gold Foil” launch is notable for plentiful reasons, perhaps chief among them the fact that it marks the first Wild Turkey series fashioned under the watchful eye of Associate Master Blender Bruce Russell.
The Russell family knows more about bourbon than one could hope to learn in an entire lifetime, and that shared knowledge is practically priceless. Bruce is the grandson of the legendary Jimmy Russell, who celebrated 70 years at Wild Turkey in 2024. Then there’s Bruce’s dad Eddie Russell, who, as Wild Turkey likes to say, rose through the ranks just like Jimmy, stepping into the Master Distiller role in 2015.
Eddie Russell’s own 45-year journey at Wild Turkey is even explored in new YouTube documentary “His Own Way,” capturing a life devoted to whiskey (and to positively excellent expressions like the Russell’s Reserve line, one which Eddie helped start with Jimmy and now bears his signature).
Yes, the Russell family knows their whiskey. A vibrant and genuine knowledge one can trace across the sun-kissed Wild Turkey distillery grounds. There’s both precision and authenticity at work in each Wild Turkey bottle, especially this latest limited-edition release.
How does this family affair come to life, delivering a masterclass in consistency? With each new offering, Bruce Russell notes, “I want it to taste like Wild Turkey, and that’s really important!” he told a group of whiskey-soused journalists with a laugh.
Lucky sippers of the new Austin Nichols Archives release should expect a softness and an earthiness balanced by caramel and vanilla elements, also rather characteristic of the Wild Turkey lineup.
There’s also a touch of clove and spice in the Austin Nichols release, with rich leather and tobacco on the palate. To call this whiskey exemplary is underselling it, especially when sipped neat.
“How should you drink it? However you like,” Bruce said while nosing a covetable dram of Wild Turkey’s latest.
It comes off the still at 125 proof and is later bottled at 120 proof after sourcing from Wild Turkey’s iconic Camp Nelson rickhouses (that would be the D, E, and F rickhouses, for the ultra-curious).

“Mother Nature’s cooking all the time,” Bruce Russell said of the oft-changing weather across the rolling hills of the Wild Turkey distillery, with sweltering summers and brisk fall and winter climes impacting the ways in which a whiskey ages. “Over time, those subtle differences matter.”
It’s the subtle differences that are captured with a deft touch in the first Wild Turkey series led by Bruce, which comes on the heels of the final edition of the equally collectible Wild Turkey Master’s Keep offering.
In developing a whiskey, “a lot of it is intuition… and confidence in yourself,” Bruce Russell later mused over sunset cocktails within the positively gorgeous Wild Turkey distillery grounds. History, and barrel-aged whiskey, hangs in the air on a balmy summer day, an intoxicating sense of place.
Of course, those unable to get their hands on this Austin Nichols Archives Collection release should take solace in knowing that whiskey enthusiast favorite Wild Turkey 101 and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are veritable bar cart workhorses, offering astonishing quality while satisfying a need for great whiskey at an accessible price.
