This spring and summer, you’re going to feel the call of the wild. You’re going to want to get off your couch, you’re going to want to get out onto the lake or the trail. Or the back patio of your favorite brewery, at least. And you’re going to want the right gear for the rugged, adventure-minded task at hand.
You’re going to want a field watch, is what I’m trying to say.
As spring breezes into town on the heels of a rather frigid winter, nature’s pull is stronger than ever, and the right tools of the trade can prove invaluable. It’s a bit different for everyone (maybe you prize hiking boots with plenty of rebound, a backpack built with plentiful storage space or a moisture-wicking shirt fashioned with extra SPF protection), but there are a few non-negotiables.
Whether you’re dying to break out your tackle box or simply rustle up a bonfire or embark on a hike from your family cabin, the right watch delivers the goods. I’m not talking about a watch with glitz and glamor, though.
I’m talking about the field watch, a style pioneered for its real-world military heritage in the trenches, prized for its accurate timekeeping, its often-infallible case construction and go-anywhere details (trench boots, meet the trench watch).
The do-it-all timepiece (at least in situations where the dress code is more “GORP-core” than “business casual”) often boasts a rugged appeal fit for everything from day hikes to long drives and maybe even a spring day on the water.
For all the places your smartwatch or your trusted leather dress watch can’t go, consider instead the field watch.
Yes, times have changed, but the construction of the best field watches often delivers heritage and quality in a simple, sturdy case.
Field watches vary in their looks and construction. Some boast higher water resistance or dive-ready capability. Others are better suited for wearing on a dusty mountain trail. Some feature stainless case designs or a rotating bezel. Others lean much more simple.
Field watches shouldn’t sacrifice casual style points, either. In the same way a minimal dress watch plays nicely with your finest navy suit, a field watch delivers a durable sensibility that pairs well with a pocket tee and blue jeans, with a short-sleeve henley and the right pair of chino shorts, or with a breezy, retro camp-collar shirt and white canvas sneakers.
These field watches are often designed to resist both shocks as well as water and debris, and the best men’s field watches also feature clean, clearly legible Arabic numerals, crisp dial markers and increased legibility in low-light situations.
And since you don’t want to fuss with your leather strap, you’ll often find field watches with textile or rubber straps.
I trust the Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition above all else. It took me through a desert offroad ride, onward to river rafting, and up into a hot air balloon. Doesn’t mean it’s the only one I trust, though. Amp up your wrist game with a few favorites from my wish list.

Luminox Atacama Field Watch
Luminox talks the talk and walks the walk, with a full roster of watches approved by, occasionally designed with, and certainly worn by U.S. Navy SEALs. The rest of its hard-wearing watch lineup isn’t to be missed either, not least the handsome Atacama Field Watch, so named for the Chilean desert and featuring the ability to glow under light for 25 years.
Yes, you read that right. And the crisp white dial nicely accents a thick, durable green textile strap option against a clean white backdrop. Within, you’ll be amazed at the precision of the Swiss-made SELLITA SW 220-1 automatic movement. At 44m, this is a beefy and reliable field watch not to be trifled with. Rest easy knowing it also boasts 200 meters of water resistance.

UNIMATIC UT4 Tool Watch
Dig deep enough into watch forums on Reddit, and you’ll find out about cult favorite Italian tool watchmaker UNIMATIC. There’s a mix of playful style paired with powerful utility in its lineup of field watches, and the company even has a touch of fashion credibility by way of timepiece collabs with American menswear maestro Todd Snyder.
But back to the UT4. Boasting a clean matte black dial with SuperLuminova-marked indices for maximum legibility, a quartz Seiko movement powers this relatively affordable take on a luxury field watch. It’s set on a quick-drying nylon strap for good measure, and the monoblock bezel is hefty and durable.
