When New Balance first released the 990 sneakers in the early 80s, the marketing headline was “On a scale of 1000, this shoe is a 990.” The original 990s included years of R&D with no expense spared to create the ideal running shoe for the time. All the technology that went into the shoe meant that it cost more than $100 a pair, which was unheard of at the time. For the first time ever, New Balance allowed someone to rework the coveted 990, and J.Crew created two new colorways based on the original V.1 sneaker. In addition to the blue/orange and tan/olive color options, J.Crew also replaced the original nylon mesh with suede. They’ll be available in select stores and online March 11th.
