Just when you thought Chevy was out of ideas for the Corvette (mid-engined 8th-gen), they pull a fast one and build a friggin’ hybrid. The E-Ray still has a booming 6.2-liter V8 engine, but this time it gets mated to an electric motor and a 1.9 kWh battery pack. The result is 655 horses and 595 lb-ft. of twist for a 2.5-second 0-60 mph time. That’s 135 more horses than the Corvette Z06. It also benefits from an eAWD system that drives all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. On the outside, it borrows styling cues from the monster Z06 including a wider body. The E-Ray also gets a Stealth Mode that allows it to drive on battery power only for speeds up to 45 mph, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, GM’s excellent Magnetic Ride Control 4.0, staggered tire widths, and hardtop and convertible configurations. Look for the E-Ray to arrive in showrooms sometime in 2023.
