Germany’s Hanhart is known for their vintage-style pilot’s watches, and the 417 ES might just be its most lauded because it rightly taps into the 1954 original 417 with the hand-wound mechanical movement, coin edge bezel, vintage lume, and fly-friendly Bund leather strap. Some, however, found the 42mm diameter of the 417 ES too large, so the brand has created the smaller and just as appealing 417 ES 1954. The difference is mainly the return of the 39mm case, followed by the revised Arabic numerals. The movement is a manual wind Swiss Sellita SW510 with 58 hours of power reserve. The handsome dial retains the classic design with two subdials, a small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute totalizer at the 3. The Bund pilot strap is made of black calfskin lined with soft Alcantara. The thickness remains the same as the 417 ES, but the diameter should make it more attractive to those with smaller wrists.
