Australia’s Alauda just pulled the covers off something awesomely wacky, a full-sized, fully-operational flying electric race car. It’s called the Airspeeder Mk3, and it will actually enter a race this year. Its frame uses a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and a slippery aerodynamic teardrop body. The Airspeeder Mk3 is powered by a 96kW purely electric powertrain routed to eight rotors, mounted in pairs. Speeds of up to 75 mph are expected, and agility should be quite impressive. A slide and lock battery swap system will make quick work of pit stops, and entrants can choose between longer range packs that are heavier or lighter packs for more agility and straight-line speed. The race will be used as a testing ground for the next-generation Mk4 Airspeeders. The race cars will be unmanned for these purposes, but it should still prove to be a hoot to watch.
