The ‘Bullitt’ Mustang Is Going to Auction

Early last year, we reported that Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Mustang was found hiding in a garage where it had been sitting for decades despite being believed to be lost to the ages. The iconic car has been making its rounds at events all over with current owner Sean Kiernan, but now it’s heading to auction. At a press event before their Monterey auction, the head of Mecum Auctions announced that there was a mystery car to be consigned in their Kissimmee auction in January 2020. He described it as “one of the most highly sought-after automobiles of all-time” and a “widely and publicly exalted vehicle of unparalleled pop-culture and historic significance” before unveiling an empty glass case… and then Kiernan drove in the original Bullitt Mustang. One of two used during actual filming, this one is the “hero” version of the car that was in most of the chase scenes but didn’t do the jump work. There’s no doubt in our minds that this rolling work of art and motoring history will be one of the most expensive muscle cars ever sold when it rolls across the block in January.
