You don’t exactly see significant and tasteful revolutions in musical instrument design and construction trying to upend centuries of tradition, and that especially applies to the venerable acoustic guitar. Well, New Zealand’s Maxwell Custom Guitars created the visually arresting and acoustically radical Infinitum guitar. It’s pretty much like no guitar you’ve ever seen… or played. The shape is traditional, while the design and construction are far from it. The slim but substantial side sound ports replace the traditional sound hole and also create an infinity symbol-like shape when viewed from the top. There’s also a ‘single point’ carbon fiber brace that manages string tension and permits the soundboard to freely vibrate. It’s easily the coolest blend of visual and musical artfulness we’ve seen in a long time.
