Look at any list of the most expensive cars ever sold and, odds are, it’s going to include Ferrari GTOs. A 1963 GTO just sold for $70 million, the highest price ever paid for a car, according to a CNBC interview with Marcel Massini, the world’s top collectible Ferrari expert. Prior to that, another 1963 Ferrari GTO sold for $54 million. And now, one of the most iconic, desirable and rare cars ever is likely going to pick up another “most expensive car” badge when this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO by Scaglietti rolls across the RM Sotheby’s auction block for an estimated $45 million. This particular example of the “car collector’s holy grail” is chassis no. 3412 GT and is the third of 36 examples produced. It was originally a test car driven by Phil Hill for the ’62 Targa Florio road race before changing hands with renowned collectors and racers as it racked up wins and a few zeroes in the value department from it’s original $18,000 price tag.
