We’re not going to claim that Dick Tracy was responsible for the creation of the Apple Watch, but he had a phone in his watch more than half a century before smartwatches were even a thing. If you’ve ever owned a Dick Tracy watch of your own—and who hasn’t?—the official Dick Tracy Watch is finally here… almost. A couple of years ago, two brothers set out to create one of the world’s most recognizable watches, starting with in-house prototyping based on the comic strips. They acquired exclusive worldwide rights and actually made a limited edition watch with a Miyota quartz movement housed in a sleek 316L stainless case with brass mesh and buttons that looks like it jumped straight from the page onto the wrist. The only issue was the radio portion of the watch, which was purely decorative and did not contain a radio. Until now! They partnered with Elite Manufacturing to make a Bluetooth module that goes inside the Dick Tracy Watch to make it function as it was originally intended to, and they’ll be launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds to make it a reality.
