The Most Expensive Japanese Whisky Ever Sold Just Went for $300K

You think it costs an arm and a leg to get some 25-year-old Pappy in your glass? Wait until you get a load of how much a bottle of Yamazaki 50-Year-Old just went for at auction. Officially the most expensive bottle of Japanese whisky ever sold, the elusive elixir sold for HK$2,300,000 (around $299,000). Sotheby’s Hong Kong auctioned off the whisky that was bottled in 2011 and smashed the previous record of around $129,000 that was held by a 2005 bottling of Yamazaki 50-Year-Old. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this hooch is hot, as Japanese whisky has enjoyed a moment in the spotlight courtesy—at least partially—of Jim Murray’s praise. Start counting your pennies for the next time a bottle crosses the block.
