These Floating Homes are Designed to Withstand Hurricanes

It’s no secret that it was a devastating hurricane season. As people regroup in the hardest hit areas, they are starting to look forward to the future. How can they combat the next barrage of storms? For residents of South Florida, those who dealt with Hurricane Irma, the answer may lie in something being described as a “livable yacht.” ARKUP, a housing startup, along with the help of architect Koen Olthuis designed a home built to withstand even a Category 4 hurricane. The homes will act like buoys when water levels rise, so they float without being flooded, and an anchoring system—not unlike one found on an oil rig—will aid in safe keeping. The homes will be pricey, however, with estimates in the $2–3 million range. Still, for those who can afford it, it’s both a bit of luxury and some peace of mind.
