The Rio 2016 Paralympic Summer Games begin September 7 and Team USA is going in with a fine piece of machinery courtesy of BMW. Over the past year, Designworks USA, BMW’s creative design firm, has worked with the U.S. team to build a better racing wheelchair. Something far, far better than the versions that came before it. This is that wheelchair. For aerodynamics, the team went with a carbon fiber build, and for comfort, they chose a seat that could be custom-molded for each athlete after they get a full body scan. This is wildly different from the racing wheelchairs currently around. Many models used were not much more than medical wheelchairs turned into tricycles. Can it help Team USA snag gold? Keep an eye out this September.
