We recently professed our undying love to the margarita, which could be considered one of the best summer drinks around. So, we feel like making a margarita this weekend. While the classic cocktail is relatively simple on its own, I like to opt for the easiest margarita recipe around: the Tommy’s Margarita.

Originally created in the early 90s in San Francisco by Julio Bermejo of Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, the Tommy’s Margarita uses agave nectar instead of orange liqueur for a less boozy, more balanced, and softly sweet riff on the original margarita. This is by far my favorite way to make the cocktail, especially because I don’t always have Triple Sec on hand. Plus, there is plenty of room to mix in different sweeteners like simple syrup, demerara syrup, coconut syrup, and more. Here’s what you’ll need.

Tommy’s Margarita Ingredients

Tequila – Like the classic margarita, you’ll want a high quality tequila. My bar cart currently has Santera Blanco, which is a very solid option. I’d also recommend El Rayo No. 1 Plata as an under-the-radar pick. For a more accessible option, go with 1800 Blanco Tequila.

Lime Juice – You’ve got to go with freshly squeezed lime juice here. There’s no room for store-bought in a cocktail like this. You want the zip and pop of fresh lime juice.

Agave Nectar – These days agave nectar is not that hard to come by. I’d recommend this one or this one. While the agave nectar works well with this agave-based spirit, there’s nothing wrong with swapping in another sweet substitute. Homemade simple syrup or demerara syrup is a great option. I actually tried it with the Madagascar Vanilla syrup from Daysie and really enjoyed it. Not too sugary but just a hint of vanilla sweetness.

Tommy’s Margarita Recipe

  1. Prepare a rocks glass with a salt rim.
  2. Combine 2 ounces of tequila, 1 ounce of lime juice, and 1/2 an ounce of agave nectar with ice in a cocktail shaker.
  3. Shake until chilled, about 15-20 seconds.
  4. Dump everything into a rocks glass (no straining necessary) and add ice to your preference.
  5. Garnish with a lime wheel and enjoy!
