The curb scene in Tony Kaye’s 1998 Neo-Nazi film “American History X” with Ed Norton still haunts us, so we’re a bit gun shy, so to speak, for films covering extremist groups. But there’s a message of hope in the new “Skin”’ movie with Jamie Bell as the American Neo-Nazi skinhead who wants out of the life. Based on the true story of Byron Widner who left the life of hatred that was captured in the 2011 documentary “Erasing Hate”, “Skin” is directed by Guy Nattiv and features “Billy Elliot”’s Jamie Bell, “Bird Box”’s Danielle MacDonald, “Luke Cage”’s Mike Colter, and “Up in the Air”’s Vera Farmigia. Bell’s myriad tattoos are visually and thematically central to Widner’s story and serve as a metaphor for his desire to undo the evil that he’s done. A24 and DIRECTV will release “Skin” exclusively on DIRECTV on June 27, and the film will drop in theaters on July 26th.
