When you take one of the world’s best-performing hypercars and make it a convertible, is it a compromise? Not when it’s the new Ferrari 296 GTS (Gran Turismo Spider). It takes the sublime Ferrari 296 GTB and adds a power-folding hardtop that retracts in a mere 14 seconds and at speeds all the way up to 28 mph. One of our favorite aspects is the engine compartment window that allows the V6 hybrid mill to be viewed in all its glory. Engine cooling, cabin turbulence reduction, and aerodynamics have been optimized for the hardtop roadster’s configuration. The 296 GTB’s power carries over to the GTS in the form of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 paired with an electric motor for a total of 818 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. 0-62 mph comes in 2.9 seconds. No price has been announced, but Ferrari will start building the GTB this year.
