Flight delays, cramped seats, interminable waiting times. Traveling has plenty of unavoidable hiccups and headaches so the last thing you should be worrying about is what to wear. But in the rush of last-minute packing and wardrobe rummaging, most of us end up picking uncomfortable or less-than-ideal garments for long haul flights. In my very short life, I have flown for hundreds of hours across the United States and abroad so I feel that I can speak with reasonable authority on this matter: some of y’all have no idea how to dress on a plane.
I have witnessed the gravest travel sins while waiting to board or shuffling through TSA. I have seen bare feet marching through the aisles. I have encountered countless wardrobe changes in full view of fellow travelers. And I am here to share some advice.
Below I will endeavor to outline some of the best garments to maximize comfort, style, and versatility while traveling on a plane. Plus, I’ll share some guidelines to make your in-flight uniform as simple and effective as possible.
What to Wear on a Plane
-
Prioritize Comfort and Warmth
Airplanes are notoriously cold so wear clothing that keeps you comfortable. Soft fabrics and layerable garments like overshirts, hoodies, and jackets are usually a good call.
-
Keep Your Toiletries Close
On a long-haul flight with multiple layovers you'll want easy access to your deodorant and toothbrush to feel fresh and clean. Keep them in your carry-on.
-
Pockets Are Essential
Don't sacrifice extra storage space by opting for a pair of joggers or a jacket with no pockets.
-
Minimize Your Accessories
Sure those rings and watches are stylish but don't hold up the line by having to take off every piece of jewelry at TSA. Stash them in your carry-on.
-
Keep It Easy and Breezy
Loose-fitting clothes and soft materials will minimize sweat and help you feel relaxed and cozy on your flight.
What Shoes to Wear on a Flight
Let’s start from the bottom up. Footwear is one of the most essential aspects of dressing for travel. I know many travelers will try to lighten their baggage by wearing their heaviest shoes on the flight. But bulky boots make for incredibly uncomfortable travel experiences. So if you have to wear heavy boots, make sure you have comfortable insoles and soft socks. Plus, you might want to consider untying your laces on the flight to let your feet breath a little.
But, if you have the freedom to pick your footwear. Always opt for the simple option. You don’t want to have to spend time untying and retying complicated laces. Nor do you want to cram your feet into constrictive dress shoes. Loafers, slip-ons, and comfy kicks are the ideal option for long-haul flights. But please, no sandals or, god forbid, flip flops.

Nike Calm Mules
These feel almost perfectly engineered for travel. The light form factor, supportive foam construction, and adjustable back strap are the ideal elements for a travel shoe. You have all the protection of a sneaker with the comfort of a slipper. Need to walk through grimy airport terminals? No problem. Want to slip your mules off during the flight? Go right ahead.
Buy: $60New Balance 574
If you're not going to rock the mules for your trip, go with a pair of New Balances. The dad shoe style has stayed in vogue (in our not so humble opinion) and the 574s offer just the right amount of retro cool and modern engineering for a sneaker that's comfy, supportive, and looks sick as hell.
Buy: $90Jacques Solovière Alexis Loafer
Lastly, if you plan to class things up on the flight, you can't go wrong with a solid loafer. They're easy to slip in and out of and offer just the right amount of first class pedigree without looking stuffy. This particular pair will look fantastic with a stylish pair of socks and complements even the most casual of airport garments.

If you take anything away from this guide, please just wear socks when you fly. No one needs to see your bare feet as you skulk through TSA or kick back on the flight. And, more practically, a good pair of socks can make a world of difference when you travel. In fact, if you have a long layover or a particularly long flight it might not be a bad idea to keep a spare pair of socks in your carry-on and discreetly swap them out to freshen up your feet.
Also, as a brief aside, there are plenty of recommendations for compression socks but in my experience I simply prefer a decent pair of comfy athletic socks.
