Burning Man Fly Ranch City

Burning Man Fly Ranch City

The annual Burning Man event will finally have a real home instead of just planting itself in the middle of the desert near Black Rock City, Nevada. The festival hosts 70,000+ “burners”, and it’s absolute insanity. Organizers were prescient in buying Fly Ranch, a 3,800-acre compound in the same area, with the hopes of building a sustainable “city” to hold the event each year. Having partnered with the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI), the group held a competition to work on designing the city and fulfill its sustainable goals for energy, water, food, shelter, and sanitation, all the while keeping things as artfully expressive as the festival itself. Ten winners were chosen, and each of them will receive grants to help make their prototypes more of a reality. We’ll see what magic comes of it, and then, hopefully, the festival’s sustainable operations will be more in line with its theme.
