We’re on the Hunt for the Best Work Bag

Our editors attempt to find the most versatile, stylish, and practical bag for work commutes.

We’re on the Hunt for the Best Work Bag

As a remote-working writer, the extent of my commute includes a short walk from my bedroom to the kitchen to my office. So, I must admit that as it pertains to my editorial duties, I don’t have much use for a work bag. But, as a bar owner, I have a near daily commute to my place of work and often need to pack efficiently for a full day of work. Historically, I have been satisfied with either a small tote bag or a travel backpack. But, I have also been extremely aware of the ludicrous image of an adult sporting a backpack as if they were walking to school. When donning a two-strap backpack there’s a fine line between business casual and playground schmuck.

So, we at Cool Material decided it would be well worth it to attempt to identify the best work bags that blend an appropriate level of professionalism, utility, and style. While travel bags can offer some useful function, we found that they often weren’t specifically designed with your daily commute in mind. As we narrowed down our search, we focused on a few key factors.

  • Versatility/Space

You want your work bag to be able to handle a full day's worth of activities. So, if you can store a set of workout clothes or multiple devices, the bag immediately gets extra points.

  • Comfort

Whether you're holding the bag like a briefcase, backpack, or messenger bag, is it comfortable?

  • Professional

Does the bag look like it belongs in the work environment?
