LuftAuto

While the German word luftgekhult literally translates to “air-cooled,” to two-time LeMans winner Patrick Long and Howie Idelson it means much more. Specifically, a brand that combines historically important (and air-cooled) cars as well as like-minded individuals in events creatively designed for the greater good. For example, their latest project—the LuftAuto. Beginning with a 1985 Porsche 911—air-cooled, of course—and the help of numerous suppliers, the team fabricated this rally-inspired 911, which can be street-driven just as easily as it can handle desert racing in Southern California. But the LuftAuto needed to be able to do something else, something more. So this bit of air-cooled history hit the auction floor in April and raised $275,000 for the Autumn Leaves Project for pancreatic cancer research. Well done.
