Hyundai Soapbox Car

Soapbox racers have traditionally been boxy numbers. Now, Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) has designed and built one for the 21st century with an edgy, aerodynamic body and joystick controls instead of a traditional steering wheel. The racer was modeled after the 45 electric car and neatly fits in the back of the i30 hatchback (Elantra GT to us stateside). A 3D computer model was created in parallel to chassis creation, and then the prototype was made. At 1.76 meters long and 1 meter wide, it’s big enough to hold an adult (no weight limits are mentioned) or a child. Since there’s no motor, gravity has to do the work, of course. As cool as it is, the goal was not to make a model that would be too challenging. The idea behind it is to provide a project that can bring the family together and have fun in the midst of the current chaos. It’s something the whole community can get behind and create its own racing series.
