Here is an interesting bit of Jaguar history: In the 1950s, after withdrawing from road racing, Jaguar had about 25 of its highly successful D-Type race cars in storage at their Browns Lane factory. At the time, demand for European sports cars in the United States was at an all-time high, so Jaguar pounced on this opportunity and converted the unused D-Types for legal road use in the States, renaming it the XKSS. Misfortune fell upon this venture not too long after as a fire broke out at Browns Lane and destroyed a handful of the vehicles completed or under construction. Sixty years later, Jaguar Classic will be hand-building the 9 replacement vehicles to the exact specifications of the 1957 model and they will be available for delivery in early 2017.
