Rene Magritte has a painting entitled “The Treachery of Images” that you’re probably familiar with. It’s a painting of a pipe with the phrase “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”) underneath. Thinking about it will take you down a rabbit hole of how words and the objects they represent really relate. What you see here is “Not the Moon”—only, this time, it really isn’t the moon. It’s a pancake. Yup, what you see here is a pancake virtually photographed with a 6oo mm telescopic lens. Printed on heavy stock paper and limited to 100 prints per edition, “Not the Moon” is like a modern day “Treachery of Images.” While it sure looks like the moon, it is, in fact, not the moon. Again, it’s a pancake.
