We’re not going to tell you that the Clockwork GameShell is just an open source version of a very popular, old school Nintendo portable gaming console. But if you drew that conclusion on your own based on looks alone, we wouldn’t fault you for it. That sentiment is true on some level, but GameShell is so much more. With an ARM-based Dev board, arduino compatible keyboard, 2.7″ screen, 1,050 mAh battery and a stereo speaker, the GameShell hardware is capable of tackling the needs of vintage games through an emulator, games you’ve programmed yourself or indie titles (a few of which are pre-installed on the device). Since it’s essentially a tiny Linux computer you’re carrying around in your pocket, you can also make it do cool things like become a WiFi speaker, 8-bit synthesizer or a smarthome remote. You can even use the micro HDMI port to hook it up to a TV for big screen gaming.
