My father has always been one to impart wisdom to me in subtle ways he knows I will eventually pick up on. When I was 14, he gave me this trick lock that he picked up on a trip to India. I spent hours trying to figure it out – granted this was in the days before the internet when I could have just looked up the solution. So I applied myself to the solution. Determined and dedicated, I finally put it together. And here’s what I learned: Even when the key is handed to you, it’s not always that simple. The solution is not always that obvious, and sometimes things take a while to piece together. The key actually does open the lock, but it’s in a tricky manner and I can’t tell you how or I’d spoil the fun.
My business has not always been easy, nor formulaic. It requires study, practice, persistence and innovation. I think of the lock as a bit of a metaphor, so I keep it on a shelf in my office as a reminder.
