What We’re Drinking: Mr Black x Whistlepig Barrel-Aged Coffee Liqueur, 1792 Bourbon, and More

Welcome to ‘What We’re Drinking,’ a recurring column here at Cool Material. Every other week our team of editors will share our favorite beverages we’ve been enjoying and how you can get your hands on them.

Mr Black x WhistlePig Barrel-Aged Coffee Liqueur
Mr Black x WhistlePig Barrel-Aged Coffee Liqueur

“We wrote about this limited edition release from Austrian coffee liqueur brand Mr Black and Vermont-based whiskey distillery WhistlePig last week. And I’ve been loving it. Basically, Mr Black sent some of their cold brew coffee liqueur to age in WhistlePig’s rye whiskey barrels for 9 months. The result is a smoky, sweet, complex liqueur that is great on the rocks. But, I’ve been making a Coffee Old Fashioned with 2 ounces Mr Black x WhistlePig, half an ounce of Four Roses Single Barrel, a couple dashes of bitters, and an orange peel. Pour over ice for a great summer cocktail.”

“This has been the surprise of the summer for me. Not only is this 1792 Single Barrel Bourbon balanced, smooth, and seriously drinkable straight up, but it also has enough substance to pair wonderfully with a Nicaraguan cigar. The affordable price makes it seem like a steal. You can purchase it through Drizly for less than $50.” Buy: $46

Ruth Lewandowski Rosé Cuvee Zero
Ruth Lewandowski Rosé Cuvee Zero

I don’t know why it took me so long to give rosés a chance, but I’m glad I did because I’ve been enjoying them allll summer. Lots of ’em. In particular this Rosé Cuvee Zero from Ruth Lewandowski. It’s not too fruity and not too dry and just the right amount of funk. And it pairs well with sushi and sandwiches. You can get order a bottle online or you’ll likely find one at your local natural wine shop. Buy: $25
