If you have $250K laying around and you want to book your spot on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo (SS2), you can now get the first look at what you’ll be wearing in sub-orbital and momentary weightless space. The outfit looks a lot different from NASA gear, and there are two layers to the futuristic getup. Under Armour was tapped to make the form-fitting base layer, spacesuit, and the radical shoes using Tencel Luxe, SpinIt, and Nomex fabrics. The base layer is specifically made to regulate body temperature, blood flow, and perspiration, and the spacesuit is specially made with targeted cushioning and special material and construction in the knees and elbows for articulation and comfort. The shoes were modeled after automotive racing shoes for the right blend of lightness, feel, and cushioning. The entire outfit will be custom-fitted to every passenger, and Sir Richard Branson, himself, will wear the exact same thing. Test flights begin in 2020 with no set date for the first commercial flight.
