It’s hard to imagine a Boston Red Sox uniform without, well, the color red. But Nike is going all out in terms of originality with its “City Connect” special-edition uniforms for Major League Baseball. Boston’s, in particular, stands out because of its total absence of the famous color, replaced by yellow/gold and light blue. What?? Well, the goal is to draw younger fans to the sport and also draw on the team’s broader hometown flavor and subculture. Even the special blue “Boston” typeface script is ultra-modern and fresh. The blue and yellow colorway comes from Boston’s Boylston Street, where the Boston Marathon course runs. The uniform’s left sleeve shows a marathon racing bib. The nod to another sport might seem odd, but the homage to another Boston sporting tradition is just another way to draw more attention to the game of professional baseball that surely could use it right now. How Boston Red Sox superfans will take to it is another question, altogether.
