The Beginner’s Guide to Getting into Tennis

The best gear for starting your tennis journey.

1

As far as I’m concerned, we have just entered prime tennis season. Sure all of the major tennis tournaments take place during the summer, but the temperature is finally starting to cool off and there really isn’t anything better than a crisp fall day on the tennis court as the sun starts to set and the overhead lights flick on.

Just like basically every Northeastern suburban kid, I was schlepped to my fair share of tennis lessons, camps, and practices. I was never very good but I maintained a passing interest in it as a worthwhile hobby, enjoying the occasional casual match with my friends and siblings. Now, as a young urban-dwelling adult, my passion for the sport has been rekindled. And it makes sense. Tennis is sort of the ultimate lifestyle/athletic pursuit for folks in their 20s and 30s with just a little disposable income. It doesn’t take a serious initial investment but you can definitely go down the rabbit hole for gear and accessories. Tennis is a great workout but it’s also a social activity with lots of downtime between the exercise. It also only requires one other partner unlike team sports or more official organizations.

So, as someone who has rediscovered their love for tennis, I’m here to guide you through all the essential tips, gear, and advice for starting your tennis journey.

Tennis Tips for Beginners
  • Sign Up for the USTA

The United States Tennis Association has a ton of resources for new tennis players. You can find local courts, coaches, and organizations to help kickstart your tennis journey.

  • Practice with a Buddy

Starting a new hobby is always easier with a friend. Starting your tennis journey with a partner who is at a similar skill level will help you both.

  • Focus on Stretching

If you want to stick around with a new athletic endeavor, make sure your body can keep up. Dedicate time to stretching and recovery.

  • Invest in Good, Affordable Gear

You don't need to break the bank on your new hobby so shop for products that are within your price range that will last a while before graduating to more expensive gear.

The Best Tennis Gear for Beginners

I’ve tested out some of my favorite tennis gear that is affordable while still offering excellent quality. One of the most important things to invest in is a good pair of tennis shoes. You can’t just wear your running sneakers or favorite casual shoes. Get a pair of dedicated tennis sneakers — your knees will thank you. In addition to the essential gear, there are also just some great tennis products that are perfect for players of any level. Make sure you bring a water bottle with you to the court. A dedicated tennis bag isn’t required but it will help keep you organized. Often I just put everything in a tote bag but having a real tennis bag will make you feel more professional. I’d also suggest a good workout towel as well as a fitness watch if you’d like to track your workouts.

Below we’ve rounded up the essential tennis gear for beginners.
