5 Splurge-Worthy Socks

Because your feet deserve some luxury, too.

While I hardly ever like to admit, I have to say, I think my parents were right. After years and years of complaining about the socks stuffed into my Christmas stocking, I can now say that it was a great gift. I was just too young and dumb to realize it. Instead, I huffed and puffed about how boring those argyle socks were and how I would have much rather preferred they spend their money on new Pokemon cards for me, thank you very much.

Now, after hitting 30 and with a bit of extra cash to spend, I’m reevaluating my own closet and realizing how a few nice pairs of socks that didn’t come from a six-pack from Macy’s might just be the future for upping my style game and giving me a bit more comfort, too.

Sorry mom and dad. You were right. I was wrong. Don’t rub it in.

Instead of treating socks as throwaway essentials, I began thinking of them like any other part of an outfit. Something that could actually reflect personal style. To keep the search focused, I came up with three simple criteria: fit, fabric, and style.

Finding the Best Socks

One may take it for granted that socks generally are all made the same. While it’s fair to say you’re not going to find as much variation as, say, a suit jacket, there are still little details which affect the overall look and feel of your chosen undergarment.

For me, I’ve made the distinction in my head about socks: athletic and lifestyle. For athletic socks, go ahead and stick with your preferred multipack brand that offers a bit of support and breathability. Heck, even go for those little ankle socks, if you’re so inclined. For the purposes of my personal search, I wanted to go for socks I could wear to add a bit more definition or dimension to my outfits, which ultimately led me to only buying socks that sit, at minimum, mid-calf. This height allows for a bit to peek out from my pants’ hem when I sit down, showing off the fresh pair I’ve invested so much time (and, in some cases, money) into.

Patterns, meanwhile, are tricky territory. While there is nothing inherently wrong with a patterned sock, these socks are usually a bit too dressy, made from a thin cotton-blend. And with today’s trends leaning toward a more pared-back aesthetic (hence the resurgence of white socks with loafers), bold patterns can feel out of step. Instead, patterns should be restrained to, at most, the texture of the sock’s weave itself or a colored band towards the sock’s opening. Everything else, I’m sorry to say, feels a bit superfluous.

Lastly, when it comes to socks you’re willing to spend money on, you’re going to want to look at the material. Closely. Sure, a nice cotton sock can be your daily driver, but certain brands’ claim to fame is elevating even the most basic of undergarments with their use of specialty fabrics like merino wool, cashmere, and linen. These additions ultimately raise the price of your socks, yes, but they will undoubtedly become your favorite pair in your wardrobe, too.

1. Merz b. Schwanen Striped Merino Wool Socks

Merz b. Schwanen hangs its hat on making better versions of your closet staples, and their merino wool socks prove the point. The merino adds extra breathability for all-day comfort, while the chunky silhouette and striped detailing give them a retro vibe that looks just right slouched over your favorite New Balances.

2. RoToTo Ribbed Linen Cotton Sock

Founded in Japan’s Nara Prefecture, a region with centuries of sock-making tradition, it’s no surprise that RoToTo has become a cult favorite among the IYKYK crowd in menswear. While the brand produces a wide range of styles, their linen-cotton blend stands out as a breathable, lightweight option that pairs perfectly with loafers or dress shoes, adding an extra layer of comfort to your day.

3. AXEL ARIGATO Signature Socks

If you can’t seem to escape the ease and comfort of a simple white tube sock, I don’t blame you. It’s the go-to option for daily wear. But if you’re looking to upgrade this particular style, go with Axel Arigato’s signature socks. It may not reinvent the wheel, but the extra bit of elastane and ribbing at the arch will undoubtedly give you support throughout a long day.

4. CDLP Mid Length Cotton Sock

Swedish brand CDLP just makes good basics. Period. Drawing on their Scandinavian heritage, the brand manages to elevate something as simple as a sock to a better version of itself, while keeping the overall design minimal. Their mid-length cotton sock features a snug, well-structured fit with a reinforced heel and toe that hold their shape wear after wear. What sets it apart, though, is the mercerised cotton—a finishing technique that enhances durability and helps the fabric retain its rich color longer than traditional cotton.

5. Gammarelli Knee-High Socks

If these socks are good enough for the Vatican, then they’re surely good enough for you. With a history dating back to 1798 and noted as the official clothier to the Pope, Gammarelli has a long sartorial history that’s perhaps a novelty on this list, but shouldn’t discount the quality of its garments. Their socks are made from cotton lisle, a light Egyptian cotton that’s extremely durable while being fairly thin and breathable, and come in a variety of colors (though the vibrant red worn by the Papal cardinals are surely the most eye-catching if you ask me).
