When it comes to adventuring gear, the humble headlamp is essential. Whether you’re pitching your tent late at night, going for a pre-sunrise hike, or just need to hit the bathroom, a quality headlamp is crucial for camping. And you won’t get much better than the Ledlenser MH5 rechargeable headlamp. Not only is it reasonably priced, it’s versatile, powerful, and extremely user-friendly.
Why Do You Need a Headlamp?
While most phones can double as a flashlight in a pinch, they simply don’t offer the same power and flexibility as a quality headlamp. While the headlamp is a staple in most backpackers’ gear, it can be extremely useful for DIY projects, car repair, or even just walking your dog at night.
Having a powerful headlamp can free your hands for the ease of setting up a tent, scrambling up a rocky trail, or cleaning out the dark corners of your garage.
Plus, in the event of a blackout, a headlamp can provide a better range of motion and a more powerful light source than most candles or even flashlights.
The Specs on the Ledlenser MH5 Rechargeable Headlamp
The Ledlenser MH5 is an LED rechargeable headlamp with two light settings (high and low), 400 lumens, and a max light distance of 180 meters. Unless you’re going spelunking in dark caverns, those specs should be just fine for most activities. Plus, the MH5 is IP54 water-resistant so it should perform in most adventure environments.
Included with the MH5 is a rechargeable Li-ion battery, USB cable, and charging station. The updated design of the headlamp includes magnetic charging so you can just plug in the charging station and snap on the magnetic charger. If left constantly on the high setting, the MH5 has a minimum battery life of about 4 hours and should recharge to full capacity in a few hours.
Why Is the Ledlenser MH5 So Good?
The basic stats and specs on the MH5 aren’t necessarily all that different from other headlamps. So, why do we love the Ledlenser MH5?
For one, the headlamp is comfortable and easy to use. The adjustable strap is relatively easy to fix on the fly and the headlamp is lightweight so it shouldn’t bob around while you’re hitting the trail.
And, the ingenious construction of the MH5 means the strap can easily be snapped off and the headlamp can be handheld or clipped to a piece of clothing. This is ideal for specific tasks where you need to shine a targeted light. Or, you could even strap it to your shirt if you’re biking at night.
Plus, while the headlamp is strapped on, you can focus the stream of light thanks to Ledlenser’s Advanced Focus System. Simple twist the bezel with one finger to transition between a bright flood and a sharp, long-distance spotlight.
Are There Any Downsides?
While the MH5 is powerful enough in most use cases, you’d likely want a higher lumen output if you’ll be in truly dark conditions like caves. But, the MH5 is perfectly suited for night hiking or camping.
Ledlenser also opted for a small rechargeable battery rather than a bulky battery pack. In our tests, the battery life is perfect for weekend trips, and the rechargeable battery is much more eco-friendly than alkaline batteries. But, it won’t last as long as more powerful headlamps like Ledlenser’s MH10. Still, pairing the Ledlenser MH5 with the brand’s portable Powercase, which features the same magnetic charging system as the included charging cable, is a perfect combination.
The Bottom Line on the Ledlenser MH5 Rechargeable Headlamp
The Ledlenser MH5 is by far our favorite headlamp for camping and backpacking. It’s versatile and powerful enough to handle just about any situation on the trail and its lightweight construction means it’s easy and comfortable to wear or carry around. Plus, the small details like the Advanced Focus System and handheld clip elevate the MH5 over other headlamps on the market.
Plus, the MH5 is ideal for everyday use around the house. We’ve tested it out for late-night gardening and even biking around the neighborhood. The Ledlenser MH5 more than does the trick.
We tested the MH5 along with Ledlenser’s Powercase and we’d highly recommend opting for both for the ease of charging on the go and as a handsome storage option for the MH5. Plus, the Ledlenser Powercase can charge as a portable charger for your phone, camera, headphones, or whatever needs a charge on the road.
If you’re looking for a headlamp that can handle more extreme situations and total darkness, you might want to opt for the MH10. But, the Ledlenser MH5 Rechargeable Headlamp is the ideal entry- to mid-level camping headlamp.
